THREE FORMER GLENSTAL PLAYERS IN MALLOW RFC VICTORY

Mallow RFC have three former Glenstal students playing on League-leading First XV. The Glenstal boys have played a pivotal role in Mallow’s success this season.

Mike O’Flynn, Sam Holt and Des O’Callaghan, who all hail from Mallow left Glenstal in 2009. They return home each weekend to play with the club. Des plays Flanker, Sam Scrumhalf and Mike in the Centre.

“We are all delighted with the way the team is going” says Mike who will always be remembered for the famous penalty he took from the half-way line to beat Crescent Comprehensive College in the last minute in the 2008 Munster Senior Cup game. “It is a young side and there is a great team-spirit” enthuses Des who Captained Glenstal in 2009. Sam says that the team “has great hopes for promotion this year. My 21st is coming up next month and it would be a great birthday present if we gained promotion to J1 status”. All three players are agreed that the years of rugby coaching and training in Glenstal have stood them well.

In their recent game against a much-fancied St. Mary’s RFC of Limerick, Sam, Des and Mike put in sterling performances for Mallow RFC. With a high level of skill Mallow defeated the huge St. Mary’s side by moving as much ball as they could to their backs. These tactics paid off as they won the game 16-10. Mallow now need to win their next four games to gain the desired promotion.

We wish Mallow RFC and their Glenstal players every success as they head into the latter stages of the season. They lead their J2 section of the Munster League and are seeking promotion to Division 1 next year. Best of luck lads.
